Yesterday we went to an end-of-the-year celebration at the principal’s house. It was a fun party. At one point, Coco had to use the bathroom and needed me to go with her. Once we got the door closed I said, “I wish there were some sweets at this party.”
“You know what I wish?” Coco asked.
“What?”
“I wish the world was made of marshmellows.”
Earlier in the day, in the 5th grade, Coco was like a celebrity. The children are batty for her. Kids in other classes even knew who she was, mostly because I had passed on advice from her the night before as part of my speech at graduation. Graducation includes “yearbooks” and they hold an ice cream social so that students can sign one anothers books. Well, kid after kid asked Coco to sign!
In the end, I think she signed more books than I did.

I poked my head out of the bathroom this morning because Layr had gone off to the grocery store. Coco was sitting in her beanbag chair watching TV.
“What are you watching, honey?” I asked.
“A show about food. [pause] There are lots of easier ways to grow tomatoes.”

Coco is into writing now. Yesterday she asked how to spell the words she wanted to write to a friend. It says, “Dear Lily, Can you help me Coco.” There was more but we got on to other things before she finished. It is a very exciting development.

Coco has the cutest shoes. They’re soft red leather and have a monkey picture on top. Sadly, she’s going to outgrow them soon. Sinead, Tristan, Coco and I (Da Da) went shopping the other day and came across a big rack of the same type of shoes. We decided to let Coco choose her new shoes. We placed a brown shoe with an elephant on the floor next to a pink shoe with a lady bug, set Coco down five feet away and she crawled right over and grabbed the elephant. We did five rounds of this test pitting the elephant against shoes of every color and various cute animals and flowers, changing the side the elephant was on, and even pitting it against other brown shoes. The result, the elephant won 100% of the time. She’ll be wearing them soon. -Da Da

I called home yesterday and had a pleasant chat with Susan who then passed me on to Coco. Coco typically tries to eat the phone cord when I chat with her so I had no great expectations. Today, however, I heard the sweetest little voice, soft, quiet and high pitched, say ‘Da Da’ several times. At first I thought it was Susan trying to teach Coco my name, which we’ve been trying to do lately, but then I realized it was actually Coco, actually saying my name. Mignon, mignon, mignon. That’s ‘cute, cute, cute’ in french.

Crazy, crazy weekend involving a very last minute trip on Friday to Johnny and Rosemary’s so that we could get to Ikea on Saturday to buy bathroom cabinets and sink. Too tired to write more than that. Look at my little builders.
