Fear

Coco LOVES her bicycle. There’s a short steep hill off the bike path that’s she’s always been afraid of. I told her it would look smaller every time she passed it. She looked at it the other day and said, “that’s a baby hill!” So she decided it was time to go down. I had her start 20 yards down the path. As she approached the split, she slowed and looked,, then veered back onto the path at the last minute. She rode 20 yards down the path, slammed on her brakes, turned around and made another pass at it. Again, she veered back to the safety of the path at the last second. This time she sprinted a mile to the next cross street without looking back. The next day, Coco tried again and did it first time, no hesitation. And we immediately looped back and did it 3 more times. Now it’s only scary for me – she goes scary-fast, no brakes.

Scared

Tonight while Coco was in the bath I asked again to look closely at two of her bruises.

“Stop being scared about my cuts,” she said in a flat, dismissive tone that seemed waaaay beyond her years.

Ding Dong Ditchie

Coco and her friend Cali played “ding dong ditchie” today. You run up to houses, ring the doorbell and run away.

In addition to that, Coco and Cali asked to visit other children around the corner. They walked off down the street together. I told Larry that it was a big moment for me, seeing my daughter go off on her own with a friend.

Sniff.

Thumb-sucking

Virtually overnight Coco has stopped sucking her thumb. This is remarkable because she wasn’t just a casual thumb-sucker; she was a professional. Her right thumb was so important to her that at night, before bed, when I put cream on her hands, I had to be extra careful not to get ANY near it.

I thought it was very cute and hope that some kid at school didn’t shame her into giving the habit up.

May You Please

Coco uses this expression constantly.

“May you please hold my backpack?”

“May you please get me a glass of milk?”

We corrected her this week, so like a lot of her other sweet expressions it will soon be a thing of the past.

Stroller

Several of the cute misprounciations Coco had when she was younger have gone away. My very favorite was “baff” instead of “bath.”

I realized when Coco opened her gift from Auntie Kristen that one difficulty Coco still has is with “str” in words. For instance she says, “shroller” instead of “stroller” and “shreet” instead of “street.”

A Loose Tooth

When we got home from school yesterday, Coco told me she had a loose tooth. It looked like it had been bumped. I asked several times what had happened but she kept telling me nothing.

In spite of Coco’s protests, I made a call to the dentist. The conversation began with questions about trauma and then suggestions for what to do with an upper tooth that is loose. When I told the assistant that it was one of the lower front teeth, she tone completely changed.

“Oh, that’s perfectly normal!” she said excitedly. She went on to tell me that baby teeth fall out anytime from 4 to 6 years old.

Though having the tooth fairy visit will be exciting, I could wait awhile on the loose teeth thing. It kinda freaks me out.

I Want to be a Boy

Tonight my daughter told me she wants to be a boy so she can have that “stuff” in front. What can you say to that except, “oh?”
